Nitrous Oxide Sedation (Laughing Gas) in Riverdale
Gentle inhaled sedation that keeps you calm — and lets you drive yourself home
Nitrous oxide — commonly called laughing gas — is the lightest and most widely used form of sedation in dentistry. At Broadview Dental Clinic in Riverdale, you breathe a controlled blend of nitrous oxide and oxygen through a small, comfortable nose mask. Within a few minutes you feel calm and at ease, yet fully awake and able to respond. Because the effects lift within minutes of removing the mask, most patients can drive themselves home and return to their day — a key difference from oral or IV sedation. If you would prefer a deeper level of relaxation, see our sedation dentistry options. Book an appointment or call (416) 466-6400.

What Is Nitrous Oxide?
Nitrous oxide is a colorless, odorless gas that has been used safely in dentistry for well over a century. Delivered through a small mask that fits over the nose, it is mixed with oxygen and inhaled with normal breathing — there are no needles and no pills to swallow.
As you breathe the gas, it produces a light, pleasant sense of relaxation and mild euphoria — which is where the nickname "laughing gas" comes from. You stay conscious and aware of your surroundings the entire time, and you can talk with your dentist and respond to instructions throughout the appointment.
Because nitrous oxide is delivered continuously, your dentist can adjust the concentration moment to moment and keep you at the exact level of comfort you need. It is the most conservative sedation option we offer, making it a natural first choice for many patients.
Nitrous oxide is ideal for mild-to-moderate anxiety and for shorter procedures because its effects are gentle and reverse almost immediately. We start low and titrate up only as needed — most patients are comfortable well before we reach a moderate dose.
If nitrous alone is not enough for your comfort or the length of your treatment, we can discuss deeper options. There is no pressure to choose more sedation than you actually need.

How It Works & What It Feels Like
Getting started is simple. Your dentist or assistant places a small, soft mask over your nose and asks you to breathe normally. You will begin inhaling a tailored mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen — no injection, no waiting on a pill to take effect.
Within about three to five minutes, most patients notice a warm, floaty, calm feeling. Some describe tingling in the hands or feet or a slight heaviness in the limbs. Time seems to pass more quickly and the sounds of the office feel further away, but you remain awake, in control, and able to answer questions.
When treatment is finished, we switch you to pure oxygen for a few minutes. This clears the nitrous oxide from your system quickly, and the relaxed feeling fades almost completely before you leave the chair. Nitrous oxide does not linger in the body the way oral or IV sedatives can.
Nitrous oxide pairs well with local anesthetic and is frequently used for procedures such as tooth extractions, fillings, and deeper cleanings, as well as routine visits for anxious patients.
Why Patients Choose Laughing Gas
Nitrous oxide is popular because it takes the edge off dental visits with very few strings attached:
Works Within Minutes
The calming effect begins just a few minutes after you start breathing the gas — no waiting for a pill to kick in and no injection required.
Drive Yourself Home
Because the effects wear off within minutes on pure oxygen, most patients can safely drive themselves home and go straight back to work or school.
Awake and In Control
You stay conscious and able to communicate the entire time. Nitrous oxide relaxes you — it does not put you to sleep or make you unconscious.
Precisely Adjustable
The gas is delivered continuously, so your dentist can fine-tune the dose in real time to keep you comfortable without over-sedating.
Eases a Strong Gag Reflex
The relaxed state helps calm a sensitive gag reflex, making impressions, X-rays, and back-of-the-mouth work far more comfortable.
Great for Kids
Laughing gas is safe, gentle, and commonly used to help nervous children sit comfortably through their dental care.
Nitrous Oxide vs. Deeper Sedation
Nitrous oxide is the lightest rung on the sedation ladder. Understanding how it differs from oral and IV sedation helps you choose the right level of comfort for your visit.
Nitrous oxide (laughing gas)
Inhaled through a nose mask. Mild, fully adjustable, and reversible within minutes. You stay awake and can usually drive yourself home. Best for mild-to-moderate anxiety, a strong gag reflex, and shorter procedures.
Oral & deeper sedation
A pill taken before the visit (or IV sedation) produces a much deeper, longer-lasting relaxation and often little memory of the appointment. The effects can last several hours, so you must arrange a ride home. Better suited to significant dental anxiety, longer or more complex treatment, and patients who prefer to remember little of the procedure. Learn more on our sedation dentistry page.
Not sure which is right for you? our dentists will review your health history, your anxiety level, and the planned treatment — for example a root canal or extraction — and recommend the option that keeps you most comfortable. Schedule a consultation to talk it through.
Is Laughing Gas Right for You?
Nitrous oxide is often a great fit if you:
- Feel mild-to-moderate nervousness about dental visits
- Have a strong gag reflex that makes treatment difficult
- Want to stay awake and drive yourself home afterward
- Are a child or teen who needs help sitting calmly
- Have a shorter procedure such as a filling, cleaning, or simple extraction
Nitrous oxide may not be the best choice if you:
- Have certain respiratory conditions (for example, severe COPD) or a blocked nose that prevents breathing through the mask
- Are in the first trimester of pregnancy
- Have severe dental anxiety that may respond better to deeper sedation
- Need a long or complex procedure where a longer-acting sedative is preferable
our dentists reviews your full medical history before recommending any sedation, so you can be confident the option chosen is safe and appropriate for you.
Frequently Asked Questions About Laughing Gas
Yes. Nitrous oxide is a conscious sedation, so you stay fully awake and aware the entire time. You can talk with your dentist, follow instructions, and respond normally — you simply feel calm and relaxed.
In almost all cases, yes. At the end of your appointment we give you pure oxygen for a few minutes, which clears the nitrous oxide quickly. The effects wear off within minutes, so most patients can drive themselves home and return to work or school. This is a major advantage over oral and IV sedation, which require a ride home.
Yes. Nitrous oxide is one of the safest and most commonly used ways to help nervous children relax during dental treatment. The dose is carefully controlled and monitored, and the effects clear quickly once the mask is removed. It is gentle enough that many kids feel comfortable getting their care done in a single, calm visit.
The relaxed feeling begins within about three to five minutes of breathing the gas and lasts only as long as you continue inhaling it. Once the mask comes off and you breathe oxygen for a few minutes, the effects fade almost completely — usually within five minutes — with no lasting grogginess.
No. Nitrous oxide relaxes you but does not make you unconscious. If you want a deeper, sleepier experience with little memory of the appointment, oral or IV sedation would be a better fit — see our sedation dentistry options.
Not at all. Nitrous oxide is simply inhaled through a soft nose mask — there is no needle and no pill. It is often used alongside local anesthetic to keep you comfortable during treatment, but the gas itself involves nothing more than breathing normally.
We generally recommend eating a light meal beforehand and avoiding a large, heavy meal right before your visit, since some patients feel mild nausea with nitrous oxide. Your dentist will give you any specific instructions based on your treatment and health history.
